Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill, pictured right with Yoda) and his pals take on Darth Vader again. |

| | Visually more polished than its predecessor, this received overwhelmingly favourable reviews (after all, it was obviously going to be a hit) and grossed over $140 million. I loved it the first time I saw it in the cinema. Once one has admired the monsters and special effects, however, the shortcomings of plot and characterization become obvious. Re-seen (especially on the small screen) the film fails to live up to its tremendous opening sequence, getting bogged down in pretentious mysticism with the appearance of the tiresome Grand Master Yoda; the characters don’t develop in any interesting way; and the movie doesn’t so much end as break off. Oscar-nominations went to John Williams (score) , Norman Reynolds, Leslie Dilley, Harry Lange, Alan Tomkins and Michael Ford (art direction), Bill Varney, Steve Maslow, Gregg Landaker and Peter Sutton (sound). | | |
