Ants made huge by atomic bomb radiation infest New Mexico and start spreading... |
Reviewed by Chris Tookey

| Much imitated monster movie of the 50s, all the more effective for realistic treatment, an eerie score and excellent cinematography. The sensible script builds logically from its fantastic premise, and the romantic sub-plot does not slow the action too much. But it is the direction which makes the film a classic of its genre: the early desert sequences are memorable, as is the climax in the Los Angeles sewers. This mildly anti-Bomb picture was favourably reviewed, although it was denounced by one magazine, Twentieth Century, as an anti-Comunist allegory calling for the extermination of Reds rather than ants. This seems an over-fanciful interpretation. | |
