Stylishly directed by Michael Mann on his big-screen debut, this delves into the psychology of professional criminals - but not as persuasively as Mann later did in his masterpiece, Heat , or his acclaimed Manhunter . The problem here is that neither the story nor the central character is sufficiently original or interesting to hold the atention for over two hours. The signs of writing and directing talent are there, however, and Mann completists will want to see this. The distinctive, atmospheric soundtrack is by Tangerine Dream.

MIXED

Powerful entertainment which lives up to its British title but doesn't open any doors to the criminal mind that have not been opened before.

(Screen International)

ANTI

It promises too much and delivers too little.

(Richard Combs, Monthly Film Bulletin)

Slick but empty melodrama.
