Two Russian families react to the invasion of their country by Napoleon. |

| Second-rate dubbing detracts from this long, lavish and faithful adaptation of Tolstoy's classic. But the set-pieces are among the most spectacular ever. King Vidor's 1956 version, starring Audrey Hepburn and Henry Fonda, has many faults (mainly of omission) but is probably more enjoyable for an English-speaking audience. | |
