Cagney was never better than in this gangster classic, underrated and even vilified on release for its brutality. Now the violence looks almost tame.

The "Top of the world, ma!" finale, when psychotic gangster Cagney commits suicide to join Ma in gangster heaven, is one of the great moments in cinema.
