A coming-of-age movie about two Mexican teenagers (Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna) who have their complacently sexist preconceptions challenged by a slightly older woman (Maribel Verdu) who joins them on a road trip. |

| This is a rude, raunchy affair with explicit sex scenes that some may find offensive. But it is refreshingly honest about hormonally rampant male teenagers. It's also - thanks to a lovely leading lady - distinctly sexy. Alfonso Cuaron's film takes an inordinately long time to get on the road, the initially amusing device of an omniscient voice-over making ironic comments becomes intrusive and tiresome, and the central three-handed relationship never becomes woven into the wider social picture. But there's always the feeling that here is a talented film-maker eager to draw from real life and not merely recycle the ideas of others. There's terrific energy here, and a more hard-edged sensibility than you might expect from the man who made the beautiful 1995 version of The Little Princess. | |
