| | A portrait of a city, in much the same way as James Joyce's Ulysses depicted Dublin. Made for German TV in 14 episodes, this is an epic in the Germanic style: i.e. it sees its characters virtually throughout as victims. Xaver Schwarzenberger's cinematography is excellent, however. It's a remake of Phil Jutzi's 1931 film, which had the not inconsiderable merit of only running two hours. | | |
