Illuminating study of the boy racer. |
Reviewed by Chris Tookey

Senna is an affectionate, endearing and clear-sighted account of the talented Brazilian racing driver (pictured) who died on the track at the age of 34.
It’s especially illuminating about his not always terribly sporting rivalry with Alain Prost, and Senna’s run-ins with the sport’s autocratic officials, notably the Frenchman Jean-Marie Balestre, who has much the same easy charm and transparent incorruptibility of FIFA’s Sepp Blatter. Director Asif Kapadia – who’s really more of an editor, since he hasn’t shot any new footage - makes excellent use of found material. This may not be the most innovative documentary, nor the most probing (it fails to mention Senna’s marriage or ex-fiancee), but it is intelligently assembled and avoids hagiography.
