A British sports drama shrewdly timed to coincide with rising Olympic hysteria.

This is an extremely formulaic underdog story of a young black woman off a council estate (Lenora Crichlow, pictured) battling her own demons and a snobby white rival (Lily James) in order to take part in our proud nation’s 4x100 metre relay team.

Visually, the film has a flat, made-for-telly look that reflects its low budget. And the chances are you’ve seen all these cliches before in films such as Cool Runnings, The Mighty Ducks and Wimbledon.

It’s terribly naive and nowhere near the cutting edge of sports movies, but has the kind of likeability that made a hit out of the equally unsophisticated Bend It Like Beckham.

It has a winning central performance by Crichlow, well supported by talented young actors you won’t have seen before on the big screen. However resistant you may be to the film’s craven lack of originality, there’ll be no shortage of onlookers urging our team on in the final straight.
