Red Lights begins in X-Files fashion, with a couple of psychic investigators (Sigourney Weaver and Cillian Murphy, pictured) showing that some supposedly supernatural events have a disappointingly rational explanation. In between detective work, they explain their scepticism to students of the paranormal.
But then a blind psychic (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement. He claims to have not merely paranormal but deadly powers, which bring him into conflict with our heroes and one of their students (a sadly underwritten role for Elizabeth Olsen).
Rodrigo Cortes’ low-budget hit Buried showed a promising new talent. Red Lights continues to suggest he has flair, but it won’t be the breakthrough movie he needs.
He manages to create an intriguing scenario, but the characters feel thin and unexplored. Worse, his screenwriting skills let him down with a couple of melodramatic plot twists that are meant to be clever but undermine the plausibility of all that has gone before. Overall, it’s an underwhelming experience, but there’s enough here to make me look forward to his next film.
