Despite a thin, predictable plot, excellent photography and a power to involve its audience make this a minor classic among family films, and a horse movie to rank alongside National Velvet. Co-writer Melissa Mathison's next success was E.T. The sequel, The Black Stallion Returns (1983), is disappointing.
