Gambler (Roger Duchesne) plans to rob a Deauville casino. |
Reviewed by Chris Tookey
|
| Stylish heist thriller which suggests that M. Melville had recently seen The Asphalt Jungle (1950). His use of location shooting, roving camerawork and jump cuts predates the French New Wave, and was clearly a great influence on it. Though Melville has become fashionable with style-conscious critics, his work always seems slower and more self-consciously arty than the American movies he imitates, and there is something unpleasant about his glorification of criminality. | |
