| Tense, tacky, frankly voyeuristic thriller with too many rip-offs of Hitchcock for comfort - not to mention an outrageously improbable plot. Mainly notable for one of Melanie Griffith's best performances. | | MIXED | | De Palma lets all his obsessions hang out. A voyeur's delight and a feminist's nightmare. | | | | (Variety) | | Gruesome, disgusting, and exploitative. But you can't take your eyes off the screen. | | | | (Nick Martin & Marsha Porter, Video Movie Guide, 1998) | | ANTI | | Brian De Palma is back to offend women, the memory of Alfred Hitchcock, anti-violence proponents and anyone with an ounce of sense. He's still the same superb technician who could once divert a critic's attention from the sadism and plagiarism with his dazzling camera work/ But his reputation has fallen since the days of Dressed to Kill , and Body Double should complete the descent. This time around he lifts characters, motivations, plots, and scenes from Vertigo , along with a thing or two from Rear Window. And violence? Let's just say the movie's centerpiece involves a woman being drilled to the floor. | | | | (Jimmy Summers, Box Office) | | Pillaging Hitchock as usual, de Palma displays none of the master's style or grace but majors instead in kinkiness and violence. Little of the plot make sense and, although Griffith is excellent, Wasson is sadly only too believable as a bad actor. Saying he's wooden is an insult to trees. | | | | (Simon Rose, Essential Film Guide, 1993) | | Semi-porno melodrama. | | | | (Halliwell's Film Guide, 2004) | | |
