Joyful musical western, with catchy songs by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster. Doris Day exudes squeaky-clean sex appeal; and though Howard Keel is a less than wild Bill Hickok, his voice is splendid. Much underrated by contemporary critics, who found it too reminiscent of Annie Get Your Gun and Oklahoma and failed to appreciate its fine original score. Secret Love won the Oscar for best song, and the movie was nominated for best sound and scoring of a musical picture.
