Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman, pictured right), a former pool hustler, passes his skills on to a cocky kid (Tom Cruise, left).

Hugely successful sequel - 25 years on - to The Hustler, in which Paul Newman played the same disillusioned drifter and pool-player. This time round, under the assured and atmospheric direction of Martin Scorsese, Newman picked up an overdue Oscar. The film isn't neary as good as The Hustler - there are too many cliches and the plot runs out of steam - but it's still stylish and gripping. There's a fine performance from Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Cruise's girlfriend, discovering the effect she has on men. Good soundtrack, too.
