Tense, detailed, claustrophobic thriller, brilliantly lit and shot. Don Siegel clearly learnt a lot from making the not dissimilar, but inferior, Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954), and here puts that experience to good use. The film features a controlled, minimalist but powerful performance from Eastwood: one of his best. Much of it has the power of Bresson's A Man Escaped - which is high praise indeed.

"An almost entirely interior film masquerading as an exterior one."

(Tom Milne, Monthly Film Bulletin)
