The world of a very rich man (Gene Hackman) crumbles as hoods close in on him. |

| Pretentious, overheated, overpraised melodrama with an awful script. Based on a true story, it is partially redeemed by stunning images and two fine performances from Hackman and Russell. This is the closest that Nicolas Roeg has got to creating a Citizen Kane; but it ain't that close. Sample line... Whorehouse madam: "Tonight, I took a bath, maybe because of you . . . My Jack had all the nuggets we needed right between his legs . . . With you, gold is everything. We had a crock of gold between us: his cock and my crack! Then, one morning . . . Jack was dead, dead inside me, dead in bed. That must have been when I started to smell bad." | |
