Mad scientist (David Hedison) turns angry insect. |

| | Panned on release, this shocker was a big hit with the public and has become more critically respectable over the years. The special effects were gruesome and shocking in their day, but now look faintly ludicrous, and the acting - by the leads in particular - suffers by comparison with Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis in David Cronenberg’s gory remake. But the narrative is gripping, with unusually feminist overtones for its period - the wife who starts as helpless becomes progressively more empowered as her husband becomes disabled and confined to his laboratory. | | |
