Hunchback (Charles Laughton) falls for gypsy girl (Maureen O’ Hara) in mediaeval Paris.

Charles Laughton has a swinging time as perhaps the most likeable monster in cinematic history. Maureen O’Hara looks beautiful and is even more touching than Laughton, who plays a little too much for audience sympathy. Director William Dieterle splendidly evokes the Middle Ages, and Alfred Newman’s score deserved its Oscar. Sets, costumes and acting combine to make this one of the few re-makes to surpass the original.
