It received very mixed reviews on its release in 1916, flopped at the box office, and was described by D.W.Griffith as “my greatest failure” (though actually his worst films were all talkies). Now, of course, this long, earnest, visually impressive film drawing together is considered a classic by film buffs. Ordinary mortals, however, may notice that a lot of it is extremely ponderous, pretentious and hard going.
