A fake mindreader (Tyrone Power, pictured right with Coleen Gray) receives a horrific come-uppance. |

| This sinister drama which teeters on the edge of being a full-blown horror film offers a profoundly misanthropic view of post-war society. Its portrait of Americans as depressed, isolated, desperate and resentful is the opposite of Capra-esque. Critics and audiences found it hard to accept the dashing Power in an unusually, though not uniquely, anti-heroic role. They did not respond positively either to the film's sleazy atmosphere; but the strangeness of the tale, Lee Garmes's noir shooting style, and the overall quality of the acting all add up to one of the most unusual dramas of the 40s. | |
