A Parisian gangster (Jean Gabin) hiding in the Algiers casbah is tempted to his doom by love of a woman (Mireille Balin). |

| Based on a true story, this is a 30s classic - a beautifully lit, highly romanticized precursor to American film noir, with lots of doom-laden atmosphere and a charismatic performance from Gabin as an existential loner against the system - or, to put it another way, a crook. Duvivier does an exceptionally skilful job of drawing attention away from the anti-hero's criminality, and stressing his loneliness and desperation. Banned during the Second World War by the French authorities who felt it was too depressing and might lower morale. | |
