Sombre, compelling study of two women, who descend into mental turmoil as their identities compete, then combine - at least that's what most people reckon it's about. Though the ultimate meaning is obscure, this is one of Ingmar Bergman's most haunting creations, with moments of savage sadism and insinuating eroticism. It contains two memorable performances by Liv Ullmann and Bibi Andersson.
