Crooks (Sterling Hayden, Louis Calhern) execute jewelry heist. |

| | John Huston’s exciting thriller was among the first to see a robbery from the thieves’ point of view. Sterling Hayden and Sam Jaffe stand out; a young Marilyn Monroe (in a small role, though you wouldn’t know this from the publicity material) exudes star quality as a moll. Harold Rosson's atmospheric cinematography was nominated for an Oscar. | | | "That Asphalt Pavement thing is full of nasty, ugly people doing nasty things. I wouldn't walk across the room to see a thing like that." | | (Louis B. Mayer, head of the studio that made the film) | | |
