A disappointment, especially in view of the talents involved. Kelly is at his most athletic and hard-working, but falls short in the charm department, and the songs - with the exception of Be A Clown , featuring the wonderful Nicholas Brothers - don't give the stars the chance to shine at their brightest. Minnelli's production is garish, and the operetta-style plot is plain silly. Oscar-nominated for Best Scoring of a Dramatic Picture.

"It wasn't the success I hoped it would be. I think one of the reasons was the public didn't want to see Judy as a sophisticate... It was 20 years ahead of its time."

(Arthur Freed, producer)
