Astronauts discover a planet dominated by intelligent apes. |
Reviewed by Chris Tookey

| Intelligent science fiction with magnificent ape make-up, splendid cinematography by Leon Shamroy which makes full use of desolate landscape (borrowed from Arizona and Utah), and a twist ending. Though under-appreciated by most contemporary critics, it did garner a few good reviews. Its reputation rose after box-office success meant that sequels were inevitable. Beneath The Planet of the Apes (1969), Escape From The Planet of the Apes (1971) are very watchable; Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle For The Planet of the Apes (1973), much less so. | |
