A disc jockey (Clint Eastwood) has a casual affair with a woman (Jessica Walter) who turns out to be insanely possessive. |

| Director-star Clint Eastwood subverts his own macho image and sex appeal to wonderful effect, in this extremely scary movie: perhaps the best thriller to tap into male paranoia (other hot contenders include Fatal Attraction, Misery and The Beguiled ). Eastwood extracts every ounce of black humour and terror from a situation which many men have experienced on a much lesser scale; the audience both shares his fear and enjoys his discomfiture. Unselfishly, he allows Jessica Walter to dominate, in the outstanding performance of her career. Like Kathy Bates in Misery, she adds depth and pathos to a role which could easily have been demeaning. Though generally liked by critics, it found little favour with audiences, who preferred Eastwood in more traditional he-man roles. |
