Henry VIII (Charles Laughton) marries... and marries. |

| Alexander Korda’s cheerfully muckraking, irreverent, historically inaccurate biopic has achieved classic status - mainly thanks to Laughton’s charismatic, Oscar-winning performance, one of the most fondly remembered in cinema. The odd musty joke doesn’t spoil the wit of Arthur Wimperis and Lajos Biros’s screenplay. Elsa Lanchester, Laughton’s real-life wife, is outstanding as the ugly Anne of Cleves, especially in the card-playing scene. It was voted third-best film of the year on The Film Daily’s annual poll of US film critics (Cavalcade was first, 42nd Street second). It cost only ?60,000 to produce. | |
