Cyborg cop (Peter Weller) combats crime.

Very funny, very violent. Much as Clint Eastwood cleaned up the city in Dirty Harry, so does our cyborg hero - half John Wayne, half biscuit-tin - take revenge on the drug-barons who blew him apart as a human. Paul Verhoeven directs the action with panache, and the script is an often witty satire on contemporary values (or the lack of them). The conflict within Robocop's character between the human and the mechanical is sensitively portrayed by Peter Weller, who creates echoes of other classic monsters from Frankenstein's to King Kong. The initially mixed critical reception reflected reviewers’ unease that the audience was being invited to applaud violence. Box-office success and a growing cult reputation among the young have resulted in a major critical re-evaluation - although this did not prevent Robocop 2 from receiving much more damning reviews than the original.
