| Classy MGM melodrama with interesting characters, three stars on top form, and a splendid special-effects climax which makes up for longueurs in the build-up. It was voted into fourth place on the annual Film Daily poll of US film critics, and was MGM’s top-grossing picture of the 1930s. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Sound Recording (Douglas Shearer). | |
