| British director James Whale, best known for quirky horror films such as The Bride of Frankenstein , turns in a glossily produced musical with plenty of pace, though he never solves the problem of a screenplay which leaps about in time too much (greatly diminishing the impact of the final half-hour) and leaves too many plot strands dangling. Even as it is, the cast is magnificent, the racial sub-plot is touching, and the numbers - especially Old Man River, Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man of Mine, and Bill - are, of course, classics. | |
