In the Depression, couples take part in a marathon dance contest . |
Reviewed by Chris Tookey

| As you might imagine from the subject-matter, the dance is a metaphor for Life, and a pretty depressing one, with Gig Young as a singularly unpleasant God. It's hardly uplifting entertainment, yet the look of the film - with its deliberately sickly colours - and an exceptionally strong cast make this a memorable microcosm of Depression-era America. John Green and Albert Woodbury were Oscar-nominated for their score. | |
