There’s a feeling of well-trodden territory about 36, a French thriller about rival cops using unethical and sometimes illegal methods to arrest criminals. There’s nothing new in the film’s thesis, which is that there’s not much difference between the police and the gangsters they are pursuing.

There’s some spectacular stunt work and very atmospheric cinematography by Denis Rouden, but the reason 36 is worth seeing is that it reunites Daniel Auteuil (pictured left) and Gerard Depardieu (right) for the first time since Jean de Florette. They spar enjoyably enough, with a similar intensity to Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in Michael Mann’s Heat.

A more ambitious screenplay might have enabled its gritty director Olivier Marchal to make better use of his co-stars; but for Auteuil, this is the latest in a run of distinguished roles, and for Depardieu it’s a long overdue return to serious acting.
