Unorthodox French thriller.

Anything for Her is a taut little thriller about a French teacher (Vincent Lindon, pictured right) whose wife (Diane Kruger, left) is convicted of a murder she didnít commit. When she becomes suicidal at being locked up, he decides to spring her from jail. And thatís it.

In most thrillers, there would be a twist concerning her guilt, but not here. The only tension lies in waiting to see if he will succeed or not, and a mass audience may feel thatís not quite enough to sustain a feature film.

Nor does writer-director Fred Cavaye convince us that this teacher of French literature would be able to use his negligible talents to outwit the French prison system and, along the way, carve an unlikely trail of death through the French criminal underworld.

All the same, the sincerity of the leading performances shines through. The ordinariness of the hero makes him attractive, and his bone-headed refusal to let practicalities stand in his way makes him a memorable leading man.

As long as you can suspend your disbelief, this is a gripping story and Ė that cinematic rarity - a touching tale of marital love. There arenít many of those around.
