It’s a simplistic, melodramatic collision of bad, warlike guys and good, peace-loving ones, though on the battlefield it’s difficult to tell them apart.
There are spectacular set-pieces, and a few insights into military strategy of the early middle ages, but the movie has all too obviously been cut down from five hours to 148 minutes for western consumption, with a predictable sacrifice of character depth and narrative coherence.
