Superficial, but not a bad introduction to Shakespeare’s play. Mel Gibson is surprisingly good, and Zeffirelli’s production emphasises the spectacle, the action and the Oedipal relationship between the Prince and his mother (Glenn Close). The best performances are by Alan Bates (as Claudius) and Paul Scofield (as the ghost). It received Oscar nominations for art direction (Dante Ferretti) and costume design.
“Hamlet is a great story. It’s got some great things in it. I mean, there’s something like eight violent deaths.”
(Mel Gibson)
