Life and death of the Son (Jeffrey Hunter, pictured) of God. |

Rather better than its nickname ("I Was A Teenage Jesus") might imply. The emphasis is on spectacle and sentiment, rather than spirituality or sex; and Philip Yordan's script makes a praiseworthy attempt to clarify the politics of the era (as usual, and rather unjustly, the Romans are portrayed as the Fascists of the piece). It may be relatively tasteful, compared to De Mille epics, but it's still too slow, solemn and reverential - and the American accents do sound incongruous. Sample line... Salome, of John the Baptist: "His heart should be ripped from his buddy".
