Two ranch-hands - one of them (John Malkovich) simple - try to find work in California during the Depression. |

| Remake of Hal Roach's black and white film. Gary Sinise and John Malkovich give fine performances (although some critics found the latter mannered and theatrical as Lenny, the gentle giant). And Sinise's direction of camera and actors is assured: he even gets a decent performance out of Sherilyn Fenn. The trouble is that today John Steinbeck's tragic story about two itinerant farm-workers seems relentlessly doom-laden. The film ends up as just a little bit pedestrian and dull. | |
