PRO Reviews
|
| | | | | A staggering work of imagination. This gorgeous and sophisticated epic fantasy unfolds like a dazzling synthesis of the Brothers Grimm, Jules Verne, and Lewis Carroll... The late Joseph Campbell (The Power of Myth) would have had a field day with the richly allusive and complex narrative of Howl's Moving Castle, which has the emotional resonance of a fable. On one level, it's a wise and witty story of a young heroine who discovers her childlike sense of wonder only after she's been turned into an old woman. The longer Sophie's forced to inhabit the 90-year-old version of herself, the bolder and more adventurous she becomes... Howl's Moving Castle also excels as a cautionary tale about the dangers of vanity. Both the Witch of the Waste and Howl are obsessed with beauty to a nearly fatal degree. While the Witch is more of a stock figure, i.e., the fairy tale villainess who meets her comeuppance, Howl is an intriguing mixture of noble hero and preening metrosexual. He bravely challenges the king's chief sorceress Madame Suliman (Blythe Danner) by opposing the war, yet goes to pieces on a bad hair day (!). Through Sophie's help, he'll ultimately reconnect with what he rashly abandoned long ago. What may sound like a pat scenario is anything but under Miyazaki's virtuoso direction. | | (Tim Knight, Reel.com) | | | | A floatingly delightful fairytale with its heart set on repealing the law of gravity. | | (Peter Bradshaw, Guardian) | | | |
