"While the picture lacks the subtler characterizations of its prototypes it does have fully as much gore as usual... Eastwood as the stranger, makes full use of his one expression, dangles a cheroot from the corner of his mouth, and, with two sequels already on the way, is obviously going to replace the ageing John Wayne. It is obvious, too, that the American Western is not dead; it has merely gone to Italy."
(Saturday Review)
"Just another Western tale of the stranger in town. But it is the fancy trimmings that make it. We have seen it all before...What we have not seen is [the presentation] in such vicious, violent and visually dramatic terms."
(Cecil Wilson, Daily Mail)
