Beneath the schmaltz lie buried a lot of good ideas... Ennio Morricone's score reinforces the sugary sentiment that defaxces the film.

(Variety)

Toto, adorable for three minutes, is encouraged to mug, mime, and make cute until I wanted to throttle the wee thing. What should be delicate and understated is almost always too explicit. Tornatore's rule of thumb seems to be: when in doubt, go for the obvious... [It] does have its moments (my eyes were occasionally moist)... If you have a tolerance for schmaltz, you should see [it] just for the potential movie, the one you invent in your head.

(Georgia Brown, Village Voice)

Alfredo's mystical sagacity is implausible, and the infant Salvatore (Cascio) is too cutely precocious by half.

(Geoff Andrew, Time Out)
