Not as good as The Exorcist . It isnít even close. Gone now is the simple clash between Good and Evil, replaced by some goofy transcendental spiritualism.
There is a very strong probability that Exorcist II is the stupidest major movie ever made. I hate to sound that categorical, because it may send collectors of imbecilities scurrying off in droves to see this execrable product; but, then, I suppose, collectors of imbecilities are the fitting audience for this film, and they deserve each other.
(John Simon, National Review)
Explosive editing, not much suspense and a waste of Burton's excellent performance. Much as I loathed The Exorcist , at least it seemed to know what it was trying to do.
(Margaret Hinxman, Daily Mail)
Richard Burton... [is attacked] by a swarm of locusts. He deserves all he gets, believe me.
(Ian Christie, Daily Express)
An almost total disappointment - muddled, confused, atrociously acted and laughably written.
(John McCarty, Cinefantastique)
It's all too ludicrous to frighten and the only time you're likely to hide your head will be in shame for watching it.
(Jack Lewis, Daily Mirror)
The director, John Boorman, just doesn't know where to stop in his quest to shock.
(News of the World)
A commercial disaster, it was released in two versions and is unintelligible in either.
